Youth N Charge

Youth ‘N’ Charge (YNC) is the youth-led, youth driven initiative of the San Romanoway Revitalization Association. Located at 15 San Romanoway, YNC features a fully operational recording studio, a safe and positive drop in environment for youth, and access to a wide range of social services and referrals.

YNC provides a supportive environment for youth aged 16 – 29 years old to embrace healthy life choices and to grow individually. With the support of a youth coordinator, a youth support worker, a studio engineer, and the SRRA’s in house social worker, for many youth, YNC provides a vital point of contact to community and social services. What is truly remarkable about YNC is that it is entirely youth led. Founded through a partnership between two local youth and the SRRA, YNC has grown to become a source of pride and a safe gathering spot for youth from the San Romanoway and wider Jane Finch communities.

Dubbed ‘An Urban Music Project’, YNC has become an invaluable community resource for youth. YNC seeks to foster volunteerism and a sense of belonging in the San Romanoway and wider Jane Finch communities. Youth aged 16 – 29 are provided with engaging artistic, recreational, and leadership programs. These programs include:

Music Entrepreneurship and Publishing Skills (MEPS) With the support of the Ontario Ministry of Business and Economic Development, MEPS participants undergo an entrepreneurial training program using music publishing as a medium. Youth work under the mentorship of experienced entrepreneurs and music industry professionals to pursue their own businesses.

Beat The Street With the support of the Toronto Arts Council, and the Ontario Arts Council, this artistic program provides youth with instruction in the area of beat production. Under the mentorship of professional musicians/producers youth receive high quality artistic instruction and a healthy alternative to anti-social behavior.

Strong Women With the support of the Toronto Community Foundation, Strong Women provides young women from the San Romanoway and wider Jane Finch community with positive recreational and leadership opportunities in an outdoor setting.

Rhythm Defines Movement (RDM) With the support of the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Tourism, RDM provides high school aged youth with a creative steel-pan, drumming, dance, and storytelling program that highlights the diversity of the San Romanoway and wider Jane Finch Community.
